While chiropractic care can be a viable option for many conditions, one we see often in our practice is scoliosis. Before turning to surgery, here’s a bit more about why chiropractic care may be worth a try in your case.

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown. This form is called idiopathic and accounts for about 80% of cases.

The curves can be S-shaped or C-shaped. Unfortunately-and frustratingly-idiopathic means “without known cause,” meaning experts don’t have all the answers for sufferers.

Common Symptoms of Scoliosis

While symptoms can vary from person to person, commonalities include:

  • One shoulder blade that is higher than the other
  • One shoulder blade that sticks out more than the other
  • Uneven hips
  • A rotating spine
  • Problems breathing because of reduced area in the chest for lungs to expand
  • Back pain

Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis

If caught soon enough, especially before the growth spurt, there is a lot that chiropractic care can help. We often recommend to begin care between 7-8 years of age and have the spine checked on a yearly basis.

Our job is to stabilize the pelvis, make sure the sacrum is balanced and help the curve straighten out. Studies have shown active chiropractic care has improved the Cobb angle and pain scores.

If you have a mild curve, you’ll need to go for regular checkups to be sure it doesn’t get bigger. Scoliosis is more likely to get worse while your bones are still growing. You’ll want to keep an eye on your child as he or she grows.
