If you think the number one reason people get massaged is because it feels good…you’d be right. There’s no way around it–getting a massage is enjoyable and relaxing, not to mention it comes with a multitude of other natural health benefits, including:

Improved sleep: According to the American Massage Therapy Association, there is a direct link between massage and the ability to get a better night’s rest. This is likely due to the fact that most people relax and unwind during massage, and leave feeling a bit less stressed than before. In addition, massage can relieve pain, which is a leading cause of keeping people up at night–especially individuals dealing with back, neck and shoulder pain.

Better circulation: The long strokes often associated with a massage help to improve circulation, allowing blood to easily travel to damaged or tense muscles and delivering rich oxygen necessary to healing.

Better mood: And not just because you’re so relaxed! Massage actually can increase the secretion of dopamine, serotonin and endorphins in the body while minimizing the release of certain stress hormones like cortisol and norepinephrine.

Reduced pain: One of the main reasons patients seek massage therapy in our practice is for pain, and not just back pain. In fact, we often welcome patients of all walks of life for things like extremity issues, pregnancy pain, hip pain, leg problems, shoulder and carpal tunnel issues, and beyond!

So, to answer the question frankly, people should get massaged because it offers several health benefits that come entirely natural and without any invasive treatment. Our team of trained massage therapists are proud to welcome patients young and old, and even specialize in techniques for those dealing with cancer, pregnant women, the elderly, athletes and more.

At Van Every Family Chiropractic Center, we do everything we can to help make massages available to all. While most insurance plans don’t cover massage therapy, we’re happy to announce that we are in network with the Blue Cross Mesa plan which covers monthly massages for education professionals. If you’re a teacher in Royal Oak, we’d love for you to stop by and discover the benefits of focused care with us firsthand. As soon as other insurance plans start covering massages, we’ll be the first to let our patients know as we hope as many as possible can take advantage of this wonderful modality.
